Beginner Courses

Kent Sailing School One Day Taster

Minimum duration - 1 day

Suggested minimum pre-course experience - None

Course content - Taster day, confidence builder. A great opportunity to try sailing and find out if you would like to take it further.

RYA Start Yachting Practical/Beginner’s Sailing Weekend

Minimum duration - 2 days

Suggested minimum pre-course experience - None

Course content - A short introduction to sailing and seamanship for the novice from basic sea terms and boat parts to weather, safety and the Rules of the Road.

Ability after course Experience of steering a yacht, rigging and sail handling, ropework and safety on board.

Course completion certificate - Yes

Once you have completed the Start Yachting course, the Competent Crew course can be completed in three or four days.

The weekends do not need to be consecutive and you can book them individually or as a package (5% discount).

RYA Competent Crew Practical

Minimum duration - 5 days and 5 nights

Suggested minimum Pre-course experience - None/a little

Course content Nautical terms, sail handling, mooring, safety, using a tender, man overboard and sailing.

You will live aboard the boat with the instructor and 4 or 5 other students/crew. Each day will involve a mixture of short passages from port to port and intensive exercises. We will be in harbour or anchorage every night but on one evening you will get a few hours experience of night sailing. The courses are always great fun. All meals are provided aboard but there will be opportunities to go ashore during some evenings

Ability after course You will be a useful member of crew who understands the workings of the yacht and can confidently help out on board casting off, under sail and mooring up.

The minimum course duration is five days, but it is commonly run over three weekends or three days plus a weekend. If you have previously completed the Start Yachting course, the Competent Crew course can be completed in three or four days.

The weekends do not need to be consecutive and you can book them individually or as a package (5% discount).


RYA Sailing Course

Intermediate Courses

RYA Day Skipper Practical

Minimum duration 5 days and 5 nights (can be split over 2 weekends as 2+3 days).

Suggested minimum Pre-Course experience - 5 days sea time, 100 miles in tidal waters, 4 night hours and Day Skipper Theory knowledge.

Course content Deck work, navigation, rules of the road, maintenance, pilotage, passage making, yacht handling under power and sail

Ability after course Skipper a small yacht in familiar waters by day.

Kent Sailing School RYA Day Skipper Preparation

Minimum duration 2 days and 2 nights

Suggested minimum Pre-course experience - Competent Crew or similar experience and Day Skipper Theory knowledge.

Course content - Content of Day Skipper Practical syllabus, navigation, pilotage, all points of sail, night sailing and berthing practice.

Ability after course - An invaluable insight into knowing what is required in order to pass your Day Skipper Practical

International Certificate of Competence

Minimum duration 1 day

Suggested minimum Pre-course experience - Experience up to Day Skipper level with theory knowledge.

Course content The ICC ticket is recognition of basic boat handling skills. The assessment involves both a written/oral and practical testing. It is a requirement for Skippers cruising in European waters. This can be done in a minimum of one day, depending on experience. An additional theory examination is taken for ICC Inland Waterways (CEVNI). This is a multi-question test paper and takes approx 15 mins

Kent Sailing School 2 day Yacht Training

Minimum duration 2 days and 2 nights

Suggested minimum Pre-course experience - To Skipper on Flotilla some yachting experience is required or you must be a competent dinghy sailor with racing experience. To crew on Flotilla - basic knowledge.

Course content - Sailing in confined waters, basic seamanship, navigation, chart work, anchoring techniques, coming alongside and mooring bow and stern to a quay. Gaining confidence.

Ability after course - Depending on previous experience either Skipper a boat on an easy flotilla or be a crew member on flotilla.

Kent Sailing School 1 Day Yacht Refresher

Minimum duration 1 day

Suggested minimum pre-course experience - Previous flotilla sailing as Skipper, equivalent experience as Day Skipper.

Course content - Update skills, helming, reefing sails, navigation, chart work, anchoring, mooring bow and stern to a quay.

Ability after course - To Skipper on flotilla with confidence, change size of yacht or sailing area.

RYA Sailing Course

Advanced Courses

RYA Coastal Skipper Practical Course Completion

Minimum duration - 5 days and 5 nights (can be split over 2 weekends as 2+3 days)

Suggested minimum Pre-course - 15 days sea time, 2 days as Skipper, 300 miles in experience tidal waters and 8 night hours plus navigation to Coastal Skipper shorebased standard.

Course content - Skippering techniques for coastal and offshore passages.

Ability after course - Skipper a yacht on coastal passages by day and night.

Course completion certificate - Yes

RYA/MCA Coastal Skipper Practical Exam

Minimum duration - Weekend after practical course - 6 to 10 hours for one candidate, 8 to 14 hours for two. Run as 2 day exam over weekend

Suggested minimum Pre-course experience - 20 days sea time, 2 days as Skipper, 400 miles in tidal waters and 12 night hours. Those without Practical Course Completion will require 30 days (2 as Skipper) 800 miles in tidal waters and 12 night hours within the last 10 years. Restricted (VHF only) Radio Operator’s Certificate and First Aid Certificate.

Course content - Skills and techniques required to Skipper safely on coastal and offshore passages by day and night including passage planning, preparation for sea, pilotage, yacht handling under sail and power, adverse weather and emergencies

Ability after course - Confidently Skipper a yacht in coastal waters by day and night and take responsibility for crew members.

Course completion certificate - Yes

Note RYA exam fees for Coastal Skipper is £135 payable to the RYA examiner

RYA Yachtmaster Refresher Course

Minimum duration 5 days and 5 nights (can be split over 2 weekends as 2+3 days)

Suggested minimum Pre-course experience - 50 days sea time, 5 days as Skipper, 2,500 miles in tidal waters, 5 passages over 60nm, including 2 overnight and 2 as Skipper.

Course content - To refresh your skills and familiarise with the yacht.

Ability after course - To pass the Yachtmaster exam.

Course completion certificate - No

RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Practical Exam

Minimum duration - Weekend after practical course - 8 to 12 hours for one candidate, 10 to 18 hours for two. Run as 2 day exam over weekend

Suggested minimum Pre-course experience - 50 days sea time, 5 days as Skipper, 2,500 miles in tidal waters, 5 passages over 60nm, including 2 overnight and 2 as Skipper. Restricted (VHF only) Radio Operator’s Certificate and First Aid Certificate.

Course content - Practical Ability after course - Confidently Skipper offshore passages by day or night and have experience to manage adverse weather conditions
